Honey Harvest May 2016

Honey Harvest May 2016

Honey harvest in May 2016 was both saddening and celebratory. We inspected the hive first to see if any activity was going on, but just as Morgyn thought the bees died over the winter as there was a draft that was in the boxes causing the bees to not make it. There was still lots of honey and we managed to save quite a bit of it. It was very sad to see our bees not make it but it happens sometimes. We hope to have more bees at our new...
Fall Honey Harvest 2015

Fall Honey Harvest 2015

It has been since last year around this time that we went into our hives! We are pretty sure we have 2 colonies 5 Supers deep and judging by how Morgyn didn’t even have to use the bee smoker on them the bees have a very pleasant demeanor! We took 2 frames of honey, not as many as last year but since it is coming up to colder weather a bit sooner this time of year we want our bees to do well over the winter with enough honey stores. It sure smelled delicious in the air with the honey in the hives. Our bees are black bees kind of interesting looking because when we bought our first bees they were yellow and quite larger. It’s been a few years now since we’ve had them now, after a few hive splits and new Queens we have more wild bees now than other bees. Morgyn was excited to go into the hive, she got her gear on and just went out there and started slowly taking off the top of the hive, she assessed the bees and how they were doing after not going into the hive all summer and it seemed like it was smooth sailing! We tried some of the honey, it was delicious! You can really taste the wildflowers that we grew this year and it was a darker honey which means lots more flavour!  ...
Stuffed Chicken Wellingtons

Stuffed Chicken Wellingtons

We had a really fun and new dinner last night! Morgyn made Chicken Wellingtons! She stuffed them with a bit of chicken tenders, seasoned bread crumbs,¬†Pecorino cheese, and some thyme sprigs along with some poultry seasoning. We wrapped them in aged salami, and put a home made honey mustard along the salami before placing the stuffed chicken pieces on to the puff pastry. After a bit of egg wash we popped them into the oven for almost an hour and then we ate. As we ate I couldn’t get over how delicious they were! I told Morgyn, “This is what I want my birthday dinner to be this year!” I can’t wait to devour this again! We dipped it in the left over honey mustard with honey from our bees!¬† Enjoy the...
